Commandos bring championship to Cincinnati

June 26th, 2010

By JEFF GEISER

The old adage, “Defense wins championships,” proved true during the CIFL title game Saturday night at Cincinnati Gardens.

On the strength of a stout defense and an efficient offense, the Cincinnati Commandos defeated the Wisconsin Wolfpack 54-40 in front of a crowd of 2,758 to give the city of Cincinnati its first professional football championship.

The Commandos defense tied the CIFL title game record after recording three interceptions – one each by DB Robbie Wilson, DB EJ Underwood and LB Torry Cornett – and routinely came up with huge plays to end potential Wisconsin scoring drives.

Cincinnati QB Ben Mauk went 18-29 passing for 195 yards and four touchdowns with no interceptions on his way to earning the CIFL Championship Game MVP Award.

After each team scored on its opening drives, the Commandos couldn’t convert on fourth and goal from the 1-yard line, as RB Greg Moore was stonewalled by the Wolfpack front four.

But Cincinnati’s defense drew first blood on the next play. On first and 10 from Wisconsin’s goal line, Cornett recovered a fumbled snap in the end zone to give the Commandos a 14-7 lead with 4:39 left in the first quarter.

It appeared the Commandos were going to pull away in the second quarter when WR Brandon Boehm snatched the football out of the air between two defenders for a touchdown, increasing Cincinnati’s lead to 20-7.

But Wisconsin quarterback Matt Schabert had other plans. He led the Wolfpack to a six play, 45-yard scoring drive just before halftime, capping it off with a 1-yard touchdown pass to Marcus Lewis as time expired and putting Wisconsin right back in the game, with Cincinnati leading 20-14 at halftime.

The third quarter started off on a frenetic pace, with both teams putting together scoring drives in each of its first two possessions, highlighted by RB Ray Jackson’s 48-yard kickoff return for a touchdown.

Mauk threw two touchdown passes in the third period: a 27-yard laser to WR Robert Redd on a fly pattern and a 29-yard strike to Boehm to give Cincinnati a 40-26 lead heading into the fourth.

Wisconsin simply would not give up without a fight. After Schabert and Mauk exchanged touchdown passes to make the score 47-33, Wolfpack WR Brandon Wogoman, who broke the CIFL title game record with 14 receptions, returned the ensuing kickoff all the way down to the Cincinnati 5-yard line.

With Wisconsin on the brink of pulling to within one score, DE James Frazier came up with the play of the game when he swiped the football out of Schabert’s hand and Wilson recovered with 7:03 left in the game.

Broken record: The Commando defense recorded 34 sacks in 2010, shattering the CIFL record for sacks in a season, previously set by the Port Huron Pirates (27) in ’06 and ’07 … Cincinnati’s defense racked up 27 interceptions on the season, one shy of the CIFL record set by the ’06 Rochester Raiders and the ’08 Rock River Raptors.

No. 1 spot: For the season, the Commandos led the CIFL in total offense (211.7 ypg), scoring offense (49.3 ppg), yards per play (5.4), rushing yards (722), and turnover margin (+14), among others. Defensively, they finished first in total defense (138.9 ypg), interceptions, sacks, and pass defense efficiency (52.4).

Cincinnati advanced to the CIFL championship game after defeating Miami Valley 48-24 Friday before a crowd of 2,225 at Cincinnati Gardens.

Cincinnati quarterback Ben Mauk threw six touchdown passes – two each to receivers Brandon Boehm, Johnny Long and Robert Redd – and finished the game 18-28 for 201 yards.

As the Commando offense scored on its first three possessions, the defense was busy shutting out the Silverbacks in the first quarter.

Commandos DE James Spikes recovered a botched shotgun snap on Miami Valley’s first offensive play to set up Cincinnati’s second touchdown, a 7-yard RB Ray Jackson rush up the middle to put the Commandos ahead 13-0 with 10:23 to go in the first.

On Cincinnati’s third possession, Mauk completed a 1-yard lob pass to Long for a score, increasing the Commandos’ lead to 21-0.

In the opening drive of the second half James Frazier swatted the football out of Miami Valley QB Chris Sanford’s grasp and Spikes recovered, setting up Mauk’s third touchdown of the game – a 12-yard swing pass to Boehm.

Boehm later sealed the deal when he caught a 33-yard touchdown bomb between two Silverback defenders at the 12:39 mark in the fourth quarter, extending Cincinnati’s lead to 41-12.

The No. 1 seed Commandos will face the winner of the Fort Wayne vs. Wisconsin game, scheduled on Saturday.

The CIFL championship game will start at 7:30 p.m. on Saturday, June 26 at Cincinnati Gardens. Tickets are available through Ticketmaster.com and the Cincinnati Gardens box office.

Commandos clinch home-field advantage in thrilling fashion

May 22nd, 2010

It most certainly wasn’t easy, but the Cincinnati Commandos clinched the No. 1 seed in the CIFL playoffs after defeating the Fort Wayne Firehawks 49-46 in thrilling fashion Saturday at Cincinnati Gardens.

The Commandos completed a frantic comeback after Firehawks RB Tramaine Billie scored his fourth rushing TD of the game to put Fort Wayne ahead 46-34 with 4:16 left in the game.

On the first play from scrimmage on Cincinnati’s ensuing possession, RB Greg Moore took a short screen pass 40 yards to the end zone to pull the Commandos within five points at 46-41 with 2:45 remaining.

Fort Wayne (3-4) went into run-out-the-clock mode and was in no hurry to run any offensive plays, but Cincinnati’s defense came up with the big stop it needed and forced the Firehawks to attempt a 62-yard field goal attempt with one minute left.

Commandos DB EJ Underwood, fresh off CIFL Defensive Player of the Week honors, initially had trouble picking up the football after the missed field goal attempt, but recovered in time to return it 53 yards for a touchdown to give Cincinnati a 49-46 lead with 50 ticks on the clock.

The Commandos defense came up with another big stop after Firehawks QB Kota Colors floated a pass from the Cincinnati 20-yard line to the end zone on the game’s final play that bounced off his intended receiver’s finger tips.

With the win, Cincinnati (9-0) is now the CIFL regular season champion and has home-field advantage throughout the playoffs.

The Commandos overcame six turnovers, eight penalties and several key mental mistakes in a game that featured eight lead changes.

The Firehawks initially built their two-score lead early in the fourth on a bizarre missed field-goal attempt that was recovered by Billie in the Cincinnati end zone for a touchdown. Underwood was the return man on the play, but out of confusion opted not to pick up the ball.

Fort Wayne went into halftime down by just three points at 21-18 despite gaining only seven net yards of total offense, capitalizing on numerous Cincinnati mishaps.

A pass interference penalty by Underwood on fourth down extended Fort Wayne’s opening drive and led to a touchdown run by Billie on the next play. The score marked the first time Cincinnati surrendered points in the opening quarter since April 10th vs. Wisconsin, a five-game streak.

Later on, a fumbled shotgun snap on Cincinnati’s third possession was returned to the end zone by Firehawks DB Jesse Allen, giving Fort Wayne a 12-7 lead at the end of the first quarter.

Firehawks WR Justin Wynn ran the second half’s opening kickoff 57 yards to the end zone to put Fort Wayne back on top 26-21.

Commandos QB Ben Mauk tossed three TDs to WR Dominick Goodman, another to WR Johnny Long and the big one of the screen pass to Moore. He finished the game 20-32 for 167 yards, five touchdowns and four interceptions. Mauk now has 46 touchdown passes on the season, 18 to Goodman.

On Fort Wayne’s second possession, DE James Frazier sacked Colors for a loss of one yard. The quarterback takedown broke the CIFL record for team sacks in a season. Two plays later, DB Jeff Franklin recorded his league-leading ninth interception of the season.

Defensive linemen James Spikes, Terrill Byrd and Frazier combined for seven sacks, increasing their season totals to 15, 8.5 and 5 respectively.

Cincinnati’s second-leading receiver, WR Robert Redd was absent from the game due to a tryout with the United Football League.

Setting the Scene: At 8-0, Cincinnati can clinch the No. 1 seed in the CIFL playoffs with a win on Saturday vs. Fort Wayne. Any combination of a win from Cincinnati or a loss by the second-place Wisconsin Wolfpack (5-2) would secure the top seed for the Commandos and home-field advantage throughout the playoffs.

Broken record: After recording three sacks in last week’s win over Chicago, the Commandos now have 26 on the season, which ties the CIFL record for sacks in one season, previously set by the Port Huron Pirates in ’06 and ’07 … Another CIFL record the Commandos are threatening to break is team interceptions. They have 25 picks through eight games, which puts them on pace to finish the regular season with 31. The ’06 Rochester Raiders and the ’08 Rock River Raptors own the record for most team interceptions in one season with 28.

No. 1 spot: The Commandos lead the CIFL in scoring offense (52.9 ppg), total offense (217.1 ypg), yards per play (5.9), rushing yards (514), turnover margin (+18), among others. Defensively, they rank first in interceptions, sacks, pass defense efficiency (52.4), and are second in total defense (144.1 ypg).

Last Week: Cincinnati defeated the Chicago Cardinals 61-13 on May 15 at Cincinnati Gardens. The Commandos were led by a dominating defensive performance that saw the unit score 20 points, collect five interceptions, three sacks and a forced fumble. Defensive back EJ Underwood scored two touchdowns on interception returns, DE James Spikes returned a fumble to the house and DB Jeff Franklin picked off three passes. Quarterback Ben Mauk threw three touchdown passes – two to WR Dominick Goodman and another to WR Robert Redd – and rushed for another. Running back Greg Moore rushed for two touchdowns.

Racking ‘em up: Cincinnati’s streak of having at least one player recognized by the CIFL with a Player of the Week Award was snapped after Week 8. Prior to that, at least one Commando received that award every week this season (excluding after the team’s April 17 bye week). Below is the list of winners, preceded by the game date for which they were honored.

May 1                 K Travis Johnson, Special Teams Player of the Week

April 24            QB Ben Mauk, Offensive Player of the Week

April 10             DE James Spikes, Defensive Player of the Week

April 2               DB Robbie Wilson, Defensive Player of the Week and K Travis Johnson, Special Teams Player of the Week

The Last Time: In their first road game of the season, the Commandos went into Fort Wayne and pummeled the Firehawks 55-27 at Allen County War Memorial Coliseum. Mauk threw five TD passes, while the defense racked up five interceptions – two by safety Robbie Wilson – and four sacks.

Promotions: The first 3,000 fans in attendance of Saturday’s game will receive a voucher for free admission to the Cincinnati Reds Hall of Fame and Museum, where the new 1990 Cincinnati Reds Wire-to-Wire Champions exhibit is now on display. Additionally, Saturday’s game has been deemed “Kentucky Night” and offers a buy-one-ticket, get-one-free discount to fans wearing apparel from any Blue Grass high school or college at the Cincinnati Gardens box office on gameday. The Highlands High School football team will be honored at halftime for winning their state-record 19th championship in 2009.

Commandos get defensive, wallop Cardinals

The Cincinnati Commandos pummeled the Chicago Cardinals 61-13 Saturday at Cincinnati Gardens, shrinking their magic number to clinch the No. 1 seed in the CIFL playoffs down to one.

It was a record-setting performance for the Commandos defense. After racking up three team sacks for the game and increasing its season total to 26, Cincinnati is now tied for the single-season CIFL record for sacks.

The Commandos (8-0) defense overwhelmed Chicago (0-7) all game long, forcing five interceptions, a fumble recovery and scoring three touchdowns. The CIFL’s top-ranked defense held the Cardinals scoreless in the second half.

Cincinnati DB EJ Underwood dominated the game early after returning two interceptions for touchdowns in the first quarter. Not to be outdone, his counterpart DB Jeff Franklin came up with three interceptions of his own. With 25 picks on the season, Cincinnati is just one shy of CIFL season record for interceptions.

The onslaught began on the game’s opening drive when Cincinnati quickly marched down field and scored on RB Greg Moore’s first of two touchdown runs of the game.

Underwood picked off Cardinals QB Ron Ricciardi’s first pass of the game and returned it 47 yards to the house to give Cincinnati a quick 12-0 lead at the 9:55 mark in the first.

Underwood later returned a missed Cardinals field goal attempt to the Chicago 2-yard line and Moore punched it into the end zone on the next play, giving Cincinnati a 20-0 lead.

Cincinnati didn’t surrender a point until the score was 35-0 in the second quarter and went into halftime leading 41-13.

Commandos DE James Spikes, the CIFL sacks leader, went to work in the second half. He recorded another 1.5 sacks to bring his total to 13.5, recovered a bobbled Chicago snap and returned it 15 yards to the end zone for a touchdown all within the third period.

The dominating defensive performance was even more impressive, considering the Commandos were without two of their starters. Defensive tackle Terrill Byrd was inactive due to a thigh injury and linebacker Clayton Mullins, Cincinnati’s leading tackler, is expected to miss the remainder of the season after suffering a knee injury in the May 8 game at Marion.

With a time of possession of just 24:19, Commandos QB Ben Mauk attempted only 11 passes, completing eight for 88 yards and three touchdowns, two to WR Dominick Goodman and another to WR Robert Redd. Mauk now has a league-leading 41 touchdown passes on the season, including 15 to Goodman.

The Commandos return to action on Saturday, May 22 at 7:30 p.m. vs. the Fort Wayne Firehawks in their final regular-season home game.
